Pelagic Clay

I first began ceramics in high school and rediscovered the practice in graduate school as a creative outlet. Much of my work is inspired by my research and experience as an oceanographer. I aim to make functional pieces that reflect the beauty of the natural world. Explore this page to see examples of my work, and follow my ongoing ceramic practice on Instagram.

The Phytoplankton Collection

Phytoplankton are tiny photosynthetic organisms that live in the surface ocean. Like plants, they take up carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This collection is inspired by the these small but mighty life forms that serve as the base of the marine food web.

four mugs decorated with diatom carvingsDiatom mugs: diatoms are a group of phytoplankton with silica (glass) shells. Their highly geometric forms inspired the carvings on these mugs. In my research I have observed that diatoms are creatures of chaos and thrive in highly dynamic ecosystems.

two stacked bowls with carvings resembling coccolithophore testsCoccolithophore bowls: coccolithophores are phytoplankton that build shells from calcium carbonate (or particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) to a particle geochemist). These bowls mirror the iconic interlocking plates of Emiliania huxleyi, the most abundant species of coccolithophore in the modern ocean.

The California Current Collection

The California Current carries cold nutrient-rich water along the West Coast. Here, upwelling fuels a rich marine ecosystem from kelp forests to seabird to the whales that migrate through the region throughout the year. This collection reflects my connection to this dynamic coastal system and the life it supports.
